Monthly Purpose, Faith & Reflection — Straight to Your Inbox
Each month, Paul Peters shares heartfelt reflections and stories that inspire you to live with purpose, faith, and gratitude.
Are you going through the motions of everyday life, feeling like deep down there must be more? The search for meaning and purpose is a universal human experience, and you’re not alone. It can take years, or even decades to figure out your life’s purpose, but that doesn’t mean you don’t have one.
I firmly believe that purpose is an intrinsic part of our human makeup, waiting to be unraveled and embodied in the journey of life. So, if it is already instilled within all of us, how do you start the journey toward answering one of life’s ultimate questions? Below I will explore the path to finding purpose. I’ll walk through God’s original design for your life, delve into how to listen to the messages in your soul, how to leverage the power of scripture and prayer, and recognize the transformative role of serving others.
1. Understand God’s Original Design
Are you measuring your worth, purpose and meaning by career achievements, social status, and material possessions? It’s easy to fall into the trap of finding purpose in material things. Perhaps you chase money, the latest products, and often, external validation. Maybe you believe achieving these things will finally help you feel the sense of fulfillment you crave.
However, true purpose isn’t gained from the attainment of material things. You can start to build meaning in your life through insight into God’s design for it. Your purpose is something divinely woven into your very being, waiting to be acknowledged and embraced.
Jeremiah 1:5 helps us understand this profound truth: “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you”. This verse is a profoundly honest truth about your very existence. Your purpose isn’t an afterthought, nor is it something you happen to stumble upon in life. It was set out by God at your inception.
This means that finding purpose isn’t about creating your own meaning, you’re looking for what already exists within you. The journey starts with introspection and not extrospection.
By looking to God, reflecting on what He has given you and listening to His guidance you can start to weave together the threads of your purpose.
2. Listen to the Longings of the Soul
Once you acknowledge God’s original design for your life, the next step in discovering purpose is to tune into messages of your soul. A practical way to think about it is to consider what brings you down and what lifts you up. These are active clues, divine messages pointing you toward meaning in your life.
Give yourself the time and space to think about your burdens in life, what invokes feelings of sadness or despair. Perhaps it’s the plight of homelessness in your state, or lack of community in your life.
Then think about what energizes your spirit. What stirs up excitement, joy and hope within you? It could be giving your time to those in need, or making a meal for your family. No matter how big or small, does it ignite a feeling of joy and satisfaction?
When you experience these feelings, take note of them. They are not coincidences. They are often God’s way of highlighting your unique gifts and personal purpose that bring light or healing to your world and others.
For me, it was in the trials and tribulations of my life that I heard His messages that nudged me toward my purpose. Because of the lack of a relationship with my father, I recognized the deep longing for connection. This was where my calling as a speaker and author truly began.
I encourage you to dedicate time for this introspection. Whether it’s journaling your thoughts about what truly moves you, or speaking to your close friends or family about the problems you wish to solve. Then, bring these reflections to God in prayer. Ask Him to show you the way for your life.
3. Remember the Role of Scripture and Prayer
Bringing your reflections to God reveals the importance of scripture and prayer in your journey. The practice of reading and praying draws you closer to your creator, which can allow your purpose to be more clear.. I encourage you to turn this practice into a daily commitment. It will help you reflect and work through what it is you want to do with your life.
If you’re unsure where to start, the book of Psalms provides insights into God’s presence and intentionality in your life. Proverbs provides practical words for everyday life. While Romans and Ephesians provide truths about your unique gifts.
Remember His word is a compass to guide your life. A compass doesn’t take you directly to your destination, but points you in the right direction. Finding your purpose is just as much about the journey as it is the destination. Tune into His words, and He will guide you onto a path of righteousness.
4. Serve Others as a Path to Purpose
Alongside scripture and prayer, I encourage serving others as a stepping stone to finding purpose. You’d be amazed at how much clarity you can gain from serving others. Stepping into acts of service allows your mind to shift toward doing something bigger and leverage your God-given gifts.
Jesus is the ultimate example. His entire life was built around serving, healing, teaching, and loving other people. When you step into a life of service, in a space that resonates with your passions and interests, your divine purpose can be felt and seen.
Acts of service can be as big or as small as you’d like. Serving in your local community is often a practical and safe space to get started. Think about volunteering at a non-profit that resonates with your passions: mentoring a youth in a skill you are experienced in, or running simple errands for a community member in need. Serving others is a powerful way to lean into your gifts.
5. Trust God’s Timing
Remember, finding your purpose is part of your life’s journey. God’s plan often doesn’t arrive with fireworks or grand announcements. It’s about listening to the subtle messages and clues that He leaves. It’s a gentle process of unfolding and embracing the life that you are meant to lead.
If things seem to be slow or stagnant, trust that you’re in a season of learning, preparation or growing your relationship with God. Your journey is yours and yours alone, and focusing on others’ seemingly perfect lives can make you feel like you’re behind. This puts unnecessary pressure on yourself. Trust that your unique timing and actions are putting you on the right path.
In times of self-doubt, Proverbs 3:6 advises: “In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight.” Surrender to the journey, trust the process with God leading the way, and He will direct your steps.
As you stand at the threshold of finding your purpose, remember, you were created on purpose, for a purpose. God has a unique plan for your life, a calling that no one else can fulfill.
So, trust God with what you do know, and trust Him with what you don’t know. Remain faithful in the small things even when the path ahead isn’t clear, your purpose is waiting for you. Stay present and ready to embrace the life God designed for you.
